Improving Safety and Productivity for Hammond Manufacturing

Hammond worked with Liftsafe to develop a custom transfer cart to solve this specific problem. Loads were able to be lifted by crane onto the transfer cart and moved safely and accurately into the laser cutting machine without the need to worry about operator error, injury or damage to the machine, ensuring maximum uptime.

Hammond Manufacturing is one of these companies. With over a century in business, Hammond has seen its share of industry changes. The company is publicly traded on the TMX (HMM.A), headquartered in Guelph, Ontario, and operates facilities in Canada, the USA, the UK, and Taiwan. As automation expands and facilities evolve, key considerations include available space and ensuring machines remain online and operating safely.

Hammond offers a broad range of standard products, modification services and technical support to electrical and electronic manufacturers, utilities and institutions through a global network of agents and distributors. Hammond has worked with Liftsafe on a number of different projects that required unique solutions in the past. When it came to this project, safety, productivity and equipment maintenance came to the forefront.

During a recent equipment upgrade, Hammond purchased a new laser cutting machine that increased production while reducing the machine’s footprint on the floor. The smaller footprint was great for efficiency, but it created a new challenge: loading the machine became much more difficult in such a tight space, increasing the risk of damage.

To solve this, our team engineered a custom transfer cart that could be loaded by the overhead crane and safely guide material into the laser cutter without contact or impact. The design takes advantage of the crane’s mobility and load capacity, allowing products to be transferred smoothly and with far less risk. The solution not only protected the equipment but also saved the team time during the loading process.
